Pipe Major Joe Brady, Jr.

The Grade 2 Monaghan Pipe Band of NYC is pleased to announce that Joe Brady, Jr. will take over as Pipe Major. Joe has been with Monaghan for about 5 years now, and brings with him more than 4 decades of playing experience. Joe is a well known EUSPBA panel judge, and has played with many bands over the years, including a long time stint with the Grade 1 Worcester Kiltie Band back in the 70s and 80s. Joe will be taking over from Tom Hoins who has brought the band up from grade 5 to grade 2. Tom is still actively involved in the band and he and others will assist Joe with this challenging role.

2006 Competition Season Update

Grade 2 Monaghan and Grade 4 Martin Duffy Pipe Bands are past the mid way point of the 2006 competition season. Both bands are fielding some newer players in their ranks this year and have revised their repertoires, but results have generally been satisfactory so far. The 2006 year sees both bands attending more contests to gain valuable experience for their members.
The Martin Duffy Grade 4 band got out first at the Bonnie Brae contest in NJ the first Saturday in June and received third place finishes from 3 of the 4 judges, and came in fourth overall. Their next outing was at the NJ Irish festival on June 25th where they received a second from one of the piping judges.
The Monaghan Grade 2 band made its debut at the Round Hill contest in Norwalk Connecticut on July 1st coming in second place overall. The Martin Duffy band also placed second at this contest.
Monaghan traveled to the Glasgowlands Festival in Massachusetts on July 15th where they played against just about every other Grade 2 band in the Eastern US. The next day saw both bands in action at the Rockland Feis in Rockland NY where both bands debuted their new medleys for 2006. The Martin Duffy Band placed third overall, and Monaghan came in fourth in Grade 2.
Hunter Mountain saw both bands again playing their medleys with Monaghan placing 2nd overall, including a strong second place in drumming and Martin Duffy coming in 6th Monaghan also played in a second MSR only contest and came in second.
Monaghan’s next outing will be at the Capital District Contest over Labor Day weekend, which includes the 2006 Grade 2 EUSPBA Championship Contest. Monaghan will also be competing at the prestigious Celtic Classic in Bethlehem PA over the weekend of September 23rd and 24th. The Martin Duffy band will next appear at the Nassau Feis on Long Island on September 17th.

Martin Duffy Memorial Takes 1st at Hunter Mountain


Under the leadership of instructor Bob Hanley, the Martin Duffy Memorial Band (Monaghan Grade IV) took 1st Place in only their second competition. Congratulations on a job well done!
The Monaghan Grade II had an impressive showing with a 3rd Overall and a 2nd in Drumming out of 5 bands.

Monaghan Pipeband was proud to learn that they were awarded Best Pipeband in the NYC ST. Patricks Day Parade. The band compiled the highest score in three different categories, among over a hundred bands.

Peter Skae & Joe Brady Jr. Back in the Ranks


Monaghan is proud to welcome back Peter Skae and Joe Brady Jr. to an already strong Roster.
Peter, who started piping under Ed Larkin and Joe brady Jr. has been an open/professional piper since 1991 and recently won a first place at the prestigious
London Highland Club Challenge Cup.
Joe Brady Jr. is an EUSPBA Panel Piping Judge. Through the years Joe has played with some of the top bands in the country.

The Monaghan family has lost two very dear members. Martin Duffy and daughter Hannah past away last night at their home in the Bronx. Martin was a major influence in the progression of the band and his passion for drumming was unmatched. Both of them will be dearly missed.
Wife Valerie and son John are in critical condition. Please keep them in your prayers.
Wake and funeral information will be posted here at a later time.

Peter Skae Wins London Highland Challenge

Monaghan Pipe Band is pleased to announce that its former Pipe Sergeant – Peter Skae - recently competed at the London Highland Club Challenge Cup at the Scottish Society of London’s 64th Annual Competition held at Hampton Court London. Peter came home with the First Place Cup in this prestigious Piobaireachd event.

Monaghan Soloists have Impressive Season


The EUSPBA has released this seasons final standings with several Monaghan players at the top of the list.

2003 Overall Standings:
Grade 1 Drumming -
Rich Janniello  - 1st Place  (18 drummers)

Grade 2 Piping -
Jesse Ofgang  - 3rd Place  (96 pipers)

Grade 3 Piping -
Scott Gajdos  - 1st Place  (260 pipers)

- Congratulations to Oran Mor and Saffron United on their 1st Place tie for the Overall Grade II band title.

Monaghan in Canada

Monaghan competed at the North American Championships in Maxville, Ontario and at the Montreal Highland Games this past weekend. The band took 5th out of 12 bands at Montreal on Sunday, with the Drum Corps taking 3rd place.

Look for Monaghan next at the Hunter Mountain Celtic Festival on August 18th in Hunter, NY.

Monaghan at Rockland

The band played at the Rockland County Feis in Stony Point, NY this past Sunday, placing third overall in a MSR competition. Congratulations to Jesse Ofgang, who played in his first ever band competition. The breakdown was as follows:

Monaghan at Round Hill

Monaghan traveled to the Round Hill Highland Games in Norwalk, CT this past Saturday to play in a medley event. The band placed second overall in the competition behind Tulach Ard of Boston, MA. The breakdown was as follows:

Monaghan at Colonial

Monaghan traveled to the Colonial Highland Gathering in Fair Hill, MD this past Saturday to play in an unsanctioned medley contest against the grade 1 City of Washington Pipe Band. Judged by Reay MacKay, David Bailiff, Willie Connell, Albert McMullin(E) and Tom Kee(D) at the end of a cold, rainy and dreary day, the event saw Washington taking first and Monaghan placing second.

Monaghan at Monmouth

Monaghan played in its first competition of the season this past Saturday at the Monmouth Celtic Festival. Although the band took second place to Saffron United, the drummers walked away with best corps of the day. Congratulations to the drummers on their win, and also to Scott Gajdos and Mark Fields on their first competition with MPB.
